CharacterS stories are bold, energetic and fun. We accept most genres, including mystery, comedy, fantasy/sci-fi, romance, history, horror, adventure and nature, but we particularly love mystery and adventure. We are mainly geared toward older kids, 8-17 and publish very few early reader pieces.

Contest Guidelines. Word count not over 1500. No poetry or reprints, please. Snail mail submissions only please. There’s a $3 entry fee per story, a limit of three stories per author. Fee is waived for subscription holders. All submissions must be typed and double-spaced, with name, address and word count on the title page. Important: enclose a short (3-4 lines) bio with each submission. Include a self addressed stamped envelope large enough for return of materials or or email address for reply. Pieces without a SASE or email address will not be acknowledged.

PRIZES will be awarded in two categories; adult and child (to 16 years of age). First prize in each category $50. Second prize, to be announced. All winners will receive a one year subscription to CharacterS. Deadline for entries August 30.

CharacterS magazine publishes quarterly during the school year: October, December, February and April. CharacterS is distributed to schools and by private subscriptions. It’s not for sale in any stores, nor is it specifically an online publication, although excerpts are published on our site. CharacterS purchases one time rights, plus the right to publish excerpts, or the entire piece on our web site. Winning contest entries will be published in a special separate issue.

Magazines are available by subscription ($14.95 yr). Sample copy $5.75.
